PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Palace Employment Shelter is designed for men between the ages of 18 and 60 who are in need of substance abuse treatment, job training, and employment. The 72 -bed facility provides temporary housing for a period of up to one year. During this time, clients are guided through a structured continuum of treatment and training designed to give them the skills they need to address substance abuse, and to find and maintain permanent employment and housing.
During the Stabilization phase, the client is directed through the Horizons gateway for educational and vocational assessment. Realistic goals are set and each person participates in a series of groups to address attitude, stress reduction, self-esteem issues, and the basics of preparing, searching for, and keeping a permanent job. Each client’s progress is supported through on-going collaboration with the Horizons and the Substance Abuse Service Center.
JOB READINESS, EDUCATION, AND VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION
Client progress is monitored via on-going joint case management between BRC’s Horizons and SASC programs. As clients move through the treatment continuum, they receive increased employment training and educational options. Groups, one-on-one counseling, and other activities address relapse prevention, money management, and the power of networking. Participants who are ready for employment may search for and obtain full-time employment with support from Palace Employment and Horizons vocational staff.
REINTEGRATION INTO THE COMMUNITY
In this phase, specialized workshops about on-the-job stress and coping skills are ongoing and available to all employed residents. Clients also learn about their rights and responsibilities as a tenant, how to deal with landlords, and other tenant-related issues. Clinical staff assist clients as they visit apartments, sign a lease, make arrangements to furnish their new homes, and finally move into their home.
AFTERCARE
Following job and housing placement, clinical staff remain in touch with each individual to provide support and encouragement in maintaining their integration into the community. Alumni groups meet regularly for peer support and to demonstrate to current program participants how their lives have changed for the better.
ADMISSION CRITERIA AND REFERRAL MATERIALS
Entry into the Palace Employment Program is through DHS referral. Clients are admitted after an initial assessment interview. Each person signs a contract requiring their participation in the Horizons and SASC programs, an essential component of their treatment plan.

The Palace Employment Program is funded by the New York City Department of Homeless Services.

Palace is located at 315 Bowery, at the foot of Bleecker Street, in Manhattan. 6 Train to Bleecker Street, walk East to Bowery. B, D, F, or Q Train to Broadway/Lafayette (exit at Houston and Lafayette), walk one block North to Bleecker and East on Bleecker to Bowery.
