PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Los Vecinos SRO is a five – storey, 35 -single room occupancy (SRO) residence providing housing to formerly homeless individuals living with mental illness or AIDS. All tenants must be eligible for, or in receipt of, Section 8 and be willing and able to pay 30% of their monthly income for rent.

Each single room is furnished with a bed, chair, storage space, and a small refrigerator. Tenants on each floor share bathrooms and a kitchen/dining area. Tenants with AIDS or HIV have a toilet and basin in their room as well.

Tenant services include: social work/case management, medication monitoring, referrals to medical facilities, counseling, support groups, sex education, HIV/AIDS education, substance abuse groups, psychiatric management, money management, recreation, and crisis intervention. Two free meals are served seven days a week.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

The following criteria will qualify a person for placement in BRC’s Los Vecinos SRO:

  • Active entitlements (ie: SSI, SSD, or PA)
  • Eighteen years of age and older
  • Mentally – ill applicants must have an Axis I psychiatric diagnosis, a recent history of homelessness, an approved HRA 1995 application, and at least six months sobriety
  • Tenants should be capable of living independently
  • Participation in day program, clubhouse, supported work, etc. is recommended and encouraged

FUNDING

Services at Los Vecinos SRO are funded in part by the New York City Departments of Homeless Services, Mental Health, and Housing Preservation and Development and the Human Resources Administration’s Division of AIDS Services and Income Support (DASIS). Funding for construction was provided by the National Equity Fund, the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, and the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.

Los Vecinos SRO is located at 93 Pitt Street, between Rivington and Stanton Streets on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. F Train to Delancey Street. JM Trains to Essex Street, then walk East to Pitt Street and then North.
